While he has an uncanny knack for mimicry, he's no mere parodist. Innes was a founding member of the cult comedy-rock group the Bonzo Dog Band and went on to write songs for Monty Python. Archaeology is a 1996 album released to celebrate The Rutles. Neil Innes, a k a Rutle Ron Nasty (the Lennon character), wrote a whole new batch of quite brilliant songs and supplemented them with two complete, previously unissued tracks he found on rehearsal tapes for the All You Need Is Cash soundtrack. The irony is that while the surviving Beatles manufactured a couple "new" songs to promote a compilation of old material, most of the "archival" material on Archaeology is actually of recent vintage.
